suburban syracuse
When I woke up this morning it was late, and raining and I had already missed the farmers market so I decided to go to a strip mall. The strip mall had marshalls, bed bath and beyond, panera and michaels, just like the north olmsted mall in ohio.
It also looked like ohio.
I ate lunch at panera bread, a name that translates roughly to bread bread.
I learned that you can buy bottled water, masquerading as liquor, for a discount at home goods.
And I saw this sign. Nothing but noodles offers noodles, salads, soups and deserts. Does this mean that the salads, soups and deserts are noodle based? Is noodle kugel a desert? Macaroni salad? Chicken noodle soup? What makes a noodle global? This sign generates many questions, but what I really want to know is, what is a pan seared soup?

euclid avenue
I am staying in a six bedroom somewhat maintained house in the university area. The house is pretty much a frat house. The guys who live here are on the crew team and have a lot of school spirit. There are large Syracuse University banners hanging in the living room and all of the bedrooms have sports paraphanelia in them. There is a huge tv in the living room and a tv in every bedroom. There is also a beer pong room, a pool table and a cardboard sign that says "Ladies 2 for 1 night".
Here is a sampling of the sweet decor in the room that I chose:
Dispatch!!
I love the skyline, I had one in my room last year.
Note the American flag, that little square next to it is the constitution and the declaration of independence. That door is the totally sweet porch off of my bedroom!!
So one of the guys who lives here during the year came up to orient me and give me the keys which was super nice. I asked some general questions about the area and where to shop, and he mentioned that Westcott street had "weird" people living there. I asked 'weird how' and he said, 'you know, like a different style of living' which turned out to mean hippies. Anyway, I went there and found a new age bookstore that sells scented oils and they pointed me to a food co-op that is really close to my house. I got a watermelon and some other stuff at the co-op but more importantly I learned about a farmers market on sundays that is AT THE MALL!! So tomorrow I am going to go to the market at the mall which happens to be on a lake.
Anyway, for dinner I made lentils with onions, garlic, carrots, garlic scapes and broccoli. I was really happy to see garlic scapes at the co-op because I have heard a lot about them but have never seen them. Incase you dont know, a garlic scape is a green stem that shoots up from the garlic bulb, they have to be picked off because if left on the garlic wont grow bigger. Anyway, here is a picture of some scapes and the terrible knives I had to work with:
And this is my really shitty knifework.:
Tomorrow I am going to buy a decent knife at the mall, and a bigger cutting board. I am also going to get an immersion blender because apparently the best way to eat garlic scapes is by making them into pesto and I fully intend to do that.

from nyc to cny
Today I drove from Brooklyn to Syracuse. The drive was ok except for everything related to New Jersey. I stopped at a farmstand in Pennslyvania and got some blackberries and I listened to greenday, bikini kill and built to spill.
The blackberries stained my fingers.
This is from the first rest stop in New York on I-81 north. It was a relief be back in New York after driving through New Jersey and Pennslyvania.
I learned that Binghamton is the carousel capital of the country.

car trouble
So two days ago I was backing out of my driveway trying to avoid two full garbage cans that were at the foot of the driveway and my car got stuck on a short fencepost. The post wedged itsself between my front bumper and wheel and when I disentangled my car from the post two large pieces of plastic had fallen out from between the bumper and the wheel. Today I took the car to the shop to get it fixed before I drive to Syracuse on saturday and they gave me this jeep to drive in the meantime. The breaks on the car were whining the whole time on my 10 minute drive home but my friend didn't think it was a big deal so I kept going. As soon as I parked in my driveway and turned off the car I heard a loud boom and a rushing noise. Smoke was ballooning from under the hood and about a gallon of neon green liquid was leaking from the bottom. My neighbor told me it looks like brake fluid. I called the autoshop and they told me not to drive it and they would get it tomorrow. To top things off the green stuff splattered all over my garage door, I am sure this will thrill the people who are slated to buy my house. Great.
